IRVING AP- Chris Comer rushed for 166 yards and two scores as Odessa Permian captured the Class 5A high school football state championship with a 28-14 victory over Aldine Saturday in frigid Texas Stadium.
Permian, making a state-record ninth state championship appearance, wrapped up an unbeaten season at 16-0. Aldine, which was in the state finals for the first time, finished at 14-2.
Comer scored on a pair of one yard runs, with quarterback Stoney Case adding a four yard score in between, as MOJO jumped out to a 21-0 lead.
Aldine cut Permian's lead to 21-14 in the third quarter on Derrick Johnson's 60 yard run and on Herman Hopson's eight yard run that capped a 13 play, 97 yard drive.
Permian quarterback Stoney Case dashed Aldine's comeback hopes by directing a
fourth quarter drive that culminated with a 15 yard touchdown pass from Case to tight end Mike Faulkner with 3:48 to play.
Permian had no turnovers in the game, but Aldine lost four fumbles. Pitches that went awry from Aldine quarterback Doug Womack to Johnson at the Permian 12 and 36 yard line thwarted two Aldine drives in the first half. Permian scored its second touchdown after recovering Herman Hopson's fumble at their own eight.
Arvey Villa finished with 77 yards on ten carries for Permian. Case was 7-11 for 58 yards through the air. Six of the passes, for 43 yards, were to Lloyd Hill.
Hopson carried 18 times for 157 yards, and Johnson 11 for 129 for the Mustangs. Womack finished with 17 carries for 88 yards, but was 0-4 passing.
Womack, who had a school-record 1,749 yards and 25 touchdowns this season, stunned the Panthers on the Mustang's first play by running 33 yards on a quarterback draw to the Permian 37 yard line. Three plays later, Aldine had a first down at the MOJO 18. Womack carried to the 12 but as he was hit his pitch to Johnson went awry, and Hill pounced on it for Permian.
From there Permian began a 15 play, 75 yard drive that resulted in the game's first score, with Comer getting the final yard.
With the ball on their own five Aldine fumbled again, with Permian's Chad Williams recovering. Comer needed only two carries to get into the endzone for a 14-0 lead with 3:48 left in the first half.
